About DVAction and frequently asked questions (FAQ) DVAction is a database of digital video and images comprised of techniques and equipment used in the general chemistry laboratory. It is a free resource designed for instructors to aid in the development of multimedia materials for their courses. Instructors can quickly link to any video segment or image (called objects) within the database or easily copy an object from the database into their own materials. The database is ideally suited for the creation of multimedia lecture presentations and online laboratory manuals and quizzes. Flexibility was one of the key issues in the design of this database. Video techniques are divided into stand-alone segments so that instructors can choose to view a technique in its entirety or view a segment within a technique. For example, if instructors wish to focus on what happens at the endpoint of a titration, they do not have to show the entire titration. They can simply select the segment containing the endpoint. This allows for the creation of materials tailored to a specific need. The video objects also come with voice-over and text. Instructors can choose to use both these features, one of these features, or none of these features. For example, voice-over may be advantageous for an on-line laboratory manual; however, a lecturer may want to provide his or her own narration for a video presentation. Finally, there is flexibility in the way the objects are accessed. Instructors can link directly to an object in the database, or they can download objects to their computer or website. The method used to access the objects will depend to some extent on the application, disk space, and network speed. Instructors may use DVAction in any creative way they choose. However, all objects within the database remain the property of the DVAction Project and the Committee for Institutional Cooperation. Q: Can I link to DVAction? A: Yes, you may link to DVAction. Detailed instructions are available. The creators of DVAction ask that all appropriate steps be taken to attribute credit; please review the complete copyright statement for more information. Q: Can I copy movies and images from DVAction to my own site or computer? A: Yes, you may copy DVAction media materials to your own computer or web site. The materials remain the property of the Committee for Institutional Cooperation and users are asked to give credit to the CIC and the DVAction project (see copyright statement for complete information). Q: Can I add materials to DVAction? A: In the future, it may be possible for end-users to add additional materials to the DVAction database. However, there are currently no concrete plans to add this feature to the project. Q: Do you have any materials about [insert subject here]? Server support provided by Northwestern University Library's Information Technology Division and Marjorie I. Mitchell Multimedia Center. DVAction runs on a WindowsNT Server. The database engine is SQLServer; dynamic page generation in asp (Microsoft Active Server Pages). Video and images served from Apple OSX QuickTime Streaming Server and Apache web server. DVAction database based on IMS Metadata standard. All of the information, content and services (collectively, the "Content") within the DVAction website is protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. The Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), Northwestern University and the University of Illinois own the Content. The Content is intended for the educational, non-profit use of users of the Service only. Permission is expressly granted to copy or link to objects in the DVAction database under the following conditions: 1) the use must be for educational, non-profit purposes 2) full and complete attribution to the DVAction project must be included; no changes in or deletion of author attribution or copyright notice shall be made and 3) users acknowledge that they do not acquire any ownership rights by downloading copyrighted material. Users may not sell, charge fees for access to, or modify any portion of the Content in any other way or for any other purpose without the written consent of the CIC or DVAction.
